The Kahler Seenplatte is a system of lakes around the communities of Großkrotzenburg, Kahl am Main and Karlstein am Main. This puts it in the border area between the Bavarian district of Aschaffenburg and the Hessian Main-Kinzig district. With the exception of the Long Lake at Großwelzheim this lake landscape was created from decommissioned lignite and sand and gravel pits of the region and was converted in the mid-20th century to a leisure center for evening and weekend guests from the Frankfurt area, Hanau and Aschaffenburg.
