It was Louis XIV himself who in 1691 ordered the construction of this gigantic cistern, with a capacity of 1,800 cubic meters. It was originally used to collect rainwater at the bottom of the roof of Notre-Dame church, in order to meet the minimum needs of the population and the garrison during terrible periods of drought. It was in service until the middle of the 19th century, but the city acquired it in 1926 to clear the view towards the portal of the church. It was fortunately saved by the protests of the associations.
