The moated castle, or the family that named itself after the castle, was first mentioned in 1260 in a document from the office of Count Wilhelm IV. It was the center of the glory of the mountains, later referred to as the Ventilate Mountains. The castle name goes back to the holy Lüfthildis. The first known owner was Dietrich von Volmestein, who sold the glory in 1358 to the brothers Johann and Conz von Vischenich.
