The name of the church indicates that it is named after the patron saint of lepers, Saint George. On the site where the church stands today, there was a small wooden church dating back to around 1150. Around the church, there was a small cluster of houses where lepers who had been banished from Svendborg lived. By the early Middle Ages, Saint George's Garden had become so prosperous that construction began on a stone church around the small wooden church. At the end of the Middle Ages, the church was expanded with a transept on the south side and a tower on the west side.visitsvendborg.dk/svendborg/svendborg/sct-joergens-kirke-gdk693216
