The castle was built on the site of two settlement farms. The settler farms belonged to the knight Otto von Enzenberg and the lords of Thüna. In 1497 the abbot Georg von Thüna was appointed imperial prince by the emperor. Thus the monastery also got worldly influence. The Thünas then also exerted influence on the city. The owners changed frequently. The Chancellor von Ketelhodt from Rudolstadt lived there before it was transferred to civil ownership in the 19th century. The last private owner was Hans-Joachim Schaede, who was expropriated as a washing machine manufacturer in 1948.
In 2006 the gardens between Hohem Schwarm and Schlösschen were redesigned. Today the music school is housed there.

After the great city fire in 1517, the knight Georg von Holbach acquired the site of the fire and had today's castle built in 1521 - 1522 using part of the still standing foundation walls of the previous building and a defensive tower of the city wall.

The building, which was formerly known as the "little palace", represents a richly structured building in the style of the early Renaissance. The seven richly structured, four-zone ornamental gables, which elegantly loosen up the facades, are characteristic. At the south-west corner of the courtyard side of the building there is a bay window, the balustrade of which is ornamentally decorated with stylized, late Gothic tracery. The richly structured portal on the south side with pointed arch and canopy capitals still shows late Gothic forms, while the use of seating niches, formed by enlarged bases and the recessing of pillars, already belong to the design principle of the Renaissance.

In 2006, the gardens at Schlösschen Kitzerstein were redesigned; today the city's music school is located here.

        Particularities:
The castle, which the Saalfeld chronicler Sylvester Lieb first referred to as Kitzerstein in 1625, has changed owners very often over the centuries. Around 1550 it belonged to the knight and Saxon magistrate Hans von Dölzig, after 1570 to the noble families of Mila, Vitzthum and Posern. At the beginning of the 18th century, the building came into the possession of the sovereign. In 1776 it was acquired by the Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt chancellor, Christian Ulrich von Ketelhodt.
