In 1331 the builders of the hill fort, the Lords of Eichhicht, were mentioned for the first time. The castle was first mentioned in 1383 as the seat of a Holbach zu Eichicht. From 1945 onwards, following expropriation, the castle became public property and served first as a retirement home, then from 1948 to 1963 as a children's recreation home and from 1963 to 1990 as an apprenticeship home for the Deutsche Reichsbahn. It has been privately owned since 2015.
