The Train Wreck Trail starts at Whistler Quarry Road and leads you into the woods around the Cheakamus River. We visited the colorful wrecks, which are a tourist magnet in the region around Whistler. It is quite surreal to see this force of destruction in the middle of nature. For those who may wonder why the trees all around are so big: This is actually not the actual site where the accident happened over 60 years ago. Some of the wagons could be recovered, the most damaged ones were placed here.

In 1956, a train loaded with lumber derailed from the north bound for Vancouver. The cause of the accident was excessive speed. Only five of the 12 wagons were undamaged. The remaining seven were cannibalized and dragged into the woods next to the tracks and abandoned.
