"At 220 km, the Lippe is the longest river in North Rhine-Westphalia and offers numerous opportunities for leisure activities in the Recklinghausen district. You can experience the river by bike along the barrier-free Roman-Lippe route, but there is also a well-developed network of paths for hikers. The Maifisch and Baldur Lippe ferries take you to the other bank dry-footed. A special experience is a canoe trip in the Lippe floodplain. The Lippe rises near Bad Lippspringe in the Eggegebirge and flows into the Rhine near Wesel. On its way through the Westphalian Bay, it flows through Waltrop, Datteln, Haltern am See, Marl and Dorsten. The Romans used the Lippe as a trade route 2,000 years ago. In the Middle Ages, the river was also an important transport route and at the same time the northern border of the historic Recklinghausen Fortress. The last hundred years have also left their mark: shipping canals were built parallel to the Lippe to transport the goods of the emerging industry. High river dykes are the result of subsidence caused by coal mining and serve as flood protection. Renaturation of the Lippe began in the 1990s. It can already be observed that animal and plant species are returning, and renaturalized areas are quickly being conquered by nature. People are also enjoying the newly created floodplains and stretches of water."
