active volcano. First eruption 2500 years ago. Last eruption 1977. Filmset of Lord of the rings (Mt. Doom). Tongariro Crossing is very busy all through the year, but the views are worth it.

A wonderful and very varied hike. Definitely recommended, but please remember the appropriate footwear, sunscreen and water. In the summer season, only 4 hours can be parked at the two access car parks. So if you do not have a friendly bring and pick up service, you need a shuttle bus.

Great to walk in the filmed scene of Lord of the Rings. Even though there is always a lot happening, it is wonderful!

I was not up there (the route to the summit was closed), I just hiked past it on the normal path (Tongarino Alpine Crossing), but it is a fascinating mountain with picturesque clouds.

Since the filming of "Lord of the Rings" he is better known under the names "Schicksalsberg" or "Mt. Doom".

The approximately 20km long hike takes you through a magical landscape in the Tongariro National Park.
