The Steinagger rises in Tillkausen, a district of Reichshof, at 426 m above sea level. From here it initially flows in a predominantly westerly direction, passes Eckenhagen to the south and flows through Oberagger and Mittelagger. Here it turns north and flows through Allenbach near Derschlag before flowing into the Agger. Here the altitude is still 198 m above sea level. On its way from the source to the mouth, the Steinagger overcomes a height difference of 228 meters, which corresponds to an average bed gradient of 20.7 ‰.
