Long before the foundation stone of the Roman fort in Saalburg was laid on October 11, 1900, this burial house was built in 1872 on Roman foundations and according to historical specifications as the first building on the Saalburg Pass. The Saalburg Association, founded in the same year, provided the funds for the construction. Inside, the Roman tombs unearthed during the excavations were to be reverently presented. The temple-like building was built in the middle of the burial ground of the Roman settlement along the Roman road to Nida, today's Frankfurt-Heddernheim. Inscriptions on the façade commemorate the soldiers of the 2nd Raeter cohort who were formerly stationed at the Saalburg and the great excavator August von Cohausen.
