Luís de Camões, (1524 or 1525 to 1579 or 1580) is one of the most important poets of the Portuguese language. His epic “Die Lusiaden” is a work of the Renaissance. Camões is also one of the most outstanding lyric poets in Europe. He also made a name for himself as a playwright in Portugal during the Renaissance and the 16th century. The day of his death, June 10th, is Portugal's national holiday.
