At the square next to the estuary, the Portuguese occupiers built a pelourinho (pillory). After the independence of Cabo Verdes, he was a symbol of the hated colonial era and partially destroyed. Restored in the meantime, Cape Verdeans today accept Pelourinho as part of their story.
