The place was first mentioned in documents in 1054, when Emperor Henry III. The town of Marcholfsheim with the associated residential areas was transferred to Emehard from the house of the Counts of Comburg-Rothenburg and later Bishop of Würzburg.[2] From 1088 Markelsheim belonged to the diocese of Würzburg. The town was temporarily the feudal seat of the von Hohenlohe-Brauneck family, then owned by the Counts of Schwarzenburg. In 1411 they had to sell the place to the Teutonic Order because of war debts.[3] During this time, Markelsheim belonged to the Neuhaus office in the Mergentheim mastership.
