The previous church was probably consecrated to the martyr Stephen. It was destroyed in the Peasants' War and then rebuilt. In 1546 the Protestant faith was introduced in the Untermaßfeld church. In 1639 she fell victim to the Thirty Years' War.

After the reconstruction, the church was consecrated again in 1709. In 1938/39, the interior was redesigned as a kind of pilot project for a divine celebration hall according to the ideological program of the "German Christians". Since then, two larger than life sculptures have dominated the church.

Unfortunately, the church is closed and there is hardly any trace of the former cemetery in front of the church. However, you can read about the finds made here on the information board. Some of the skeletons were arranged in an unusual way.
