This Renaissance-style castle-palace dates from 1929, although it was completed in 1933. Due to its elevated position and strategic control over the Isla de las Palomas and the Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno, the hill soon began to have military use.
In 1771 the hermitage was converted into a gunpowder warehouse and during the War of Independence the English demolished it and began work on a fort for artillery, of which there are still remains.
