Königsmaar or Rehsprungmaar - many of the ponds in the Kottenforst are strangely called "Maare". They have nothing in common with the maaren of volcanic origin from the Westeifel. "The" Maar (from Low German mâr, also môr or mêr, see bog, sea, march) is in the region, the general name for a wetland (swamp, bog, wet meadow, Au or Bruchwald) or a still water. We do not know if the waters were man-made or of natural origin. Source: villewaelder.de/de/villewaelder-entdecken/die-natur/lebensraum-wasser
