Water tower - an important monument of the Montfort city
    First mentioned in 1482
All three towers used to be an important part of the defense system and are now among the best preserved medieval monuments in Vorarlberg. The name water tower comes from the time when there was an access to the Ill, the river was the city boundary for centuries. Therefore, the city wall was reinforced by the water tower, which is first mentioned in 1482, and served to defend the city center against the Confederates. On the west side of the tower there is a fresco with the Austrian coat of arms with a helmet bush and peacock feathers as an ornament. The year 1518 heralds the ties between the city and its residents and Austria. Bullet impacts show that many a cheeky enemy has broken their teeth here.
    Prevents demolition
In 1924, the demolition of the water tower was discussed when constructional difficulties arose to build an underground connecting canal at the water tower and the abutment of the Franz Joseph Bridge. Had the construction engineers had their way, the venerable water tower would have had to be demolished because of this connecting channel. The Heimatschutzverein (Heimatschutzverein) and the Ministry of Public Works opposed this plan, which meant that the building could be preserved after hard disputes. The medieval building was underpinned with various concrete foundations and columns and the connecting channel was led through under the tower.
