    De Volmolen was built by citizens from the towns of Merselo, out of initiative from the citizens. The full mill runs on the water from the Loobeek

      On the information board at the mill;

      THE VOLMOLEN

      When examining old maps of this area, the Loobeek foundation discovered a right-angled branch between the Overloonseweg and the A73. This indicated that the stream was dammed at that location to power a water mill. It turned out to be the fulling mill of the medieval weavers' guild: De Neeje Meule.

      Research in ancient sources has not told us anything about what the mills looked like. To gain knowledge, a study trip was made to Romania. There are still some working fulling mills there. The foundation used this information to rebuild this fulling mill. The place where we are now is the only place with a rapid in the Loobeek. This is necessary to make the wheel turn.

      WHAT STINKS THERE?

      There used to be many fulling mills in the Netherlands, but they have all disappeared. Full mills were also called stink mills. Fabrics woven from sheep's wool were made here. This fulling made the fabric denser and firmer and turned the fabric into felt. To do this, the substance had to be kneaded for days in a tub with earth, urine and soap. At first this was done with the feet, later this work was done by fulling mills. In this mill the fabric was pounded with wooden pestles. Working with urine made it stink enormously in and around these mills. Very soon these mills had to be built outside the city because of the odor nuisance.
