The castle dates from the early 12th century and came into the possession of the Counts of Helfenstein in the 14th century. After the castle was severely damaged in the Thirty Years War, it was only partially rebuilt. The ruins fell into disrepair and it was not until the 20th century that efforts were made to preserve the castle's condition. In the 1980s, large parts of the castle ruins were renovated and, above all, the two towers on the valley side were completely repaired.
In 2010 part of the defensive wall on the slope collapsed. The Kaltenburg-Verein organized a repair of the shield wall only with donations. The work was completed in the summer of 2018 and now the castle shines again in all its glory.

The Kaltenburg ruins are extensive and offer a great view. It is also very beautiful to look at from the valley.

Hello everybody,
the castle can be visited all year round. We currently have two tours every first Sunday of the month at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. They last about an hour and you learn a lot, even things that are not in the history books. The tour costs € 5 for adults and is free for children.
