The castle dates back to the early 12th century and came into the possession of the Counts of Helfenstein in the 14th century. After the castle was significantly damaged in the Thirty Years' War, was only partially a reconstruction. The ruin fell rapidly and only in the 20th century was it set to maintain the state of the castle. In the 1980s, large parts of the castle ruin were renovated and above all the two downhill towers completely repaired.
In 2010, part of the hillside defensive wall collapsed. Only by donations, the Kaltenburg Association organized a repair of the shield wall. In the summer of 2018, the work was completed and now the castle shines again in all its splendor.

The castle can be visited all year round. At the moment we do two tours every first Sunday of the month at 11am and at 2pm. They take about an hour and you learn a lot, even things that are not in the history books. The guide costs 5 € for adults, for children it is free.
