Herrenchiemsee is the largest island in the Chiemsee and is served by Chiemsee shipping all year round. Herrenchiemsee Palace on the island is one of the most famous sights in Germany: imposing both inside and out, fairytale like the builder King Ludwig II.

The Herreninsel (also known as Herrenchiemsee, former name Herrenwörth) is the largest of the three islands in Lake Chiemsee with a total area of 238 hectares. Together with Fraueninsel and Krautinsel, it forms the municipality of Chiemsee, which is the second smallest in Bavaria in terms of area after Buckenhof. It is known for the New Herrenchiemsee Palace built by Ludwig II.
