The workpiece that the Upper Franconian artisan is working on was part of the most famous tree in the Lonnerstadt district. According to Reich estimates, an oak tree that is around 250 years old and that is rooted above the beer cellars on a dirt road on the outskirts. There are only a few meters left of the once 22-meter-high shade.

After a last unsuccessful rescue attempt seven years ago, only the tree stump is left. It measures more than six meters in circumference below. The fruit and horticultural association Fetzelhofen-Ailsbach secured the dead natural monument with a steel cable and struts. It stands on an extremely steep slope where the stump could endanger hikers or vehicles.

The tree stump is well secured.

And then Herrmann Popp, the Fetzelhofen innkeeper and tree-keeper, had an idea: You could use part of the trunk that had been cut off for safety reasons to support the remaining stump. So that it doesn't look too rudimentary, the Fetzelhofen-based company wanted to give the project a creative touch.

The Rübezahl gets color. The nature conservation authorities are also involved in the action. They want the remains of the once mighty oak tree to be preserved as a biotope tree. These are known to serve as habitats for insects. The beehive, which is to be placed in the cavity of the trunk, is entirely in this sense.
