At the beginning of the 12th century, Goswin, a scion of the House of Petegem near Oudenaarde, near the Fifta or Vichtebeek, received property in fief from the Count of Flanders, along with the associated rights and title. He became the first Lord of Vichte and the progenitor of the noble family "van der Vichte," which would continue to rule the lordship until around 1680.
