Bayerisch Eisenstein lies directly on the border with the Czech Republic and thus directly on a line that once split the beautiful Eisensteiner valley. At the time of the Iron Curtain it was only possible to enter the other side with a visa. Fortunately, this is now a thing of the past. The station still bears witness to this time and reminds it in a bizarre way: The border runs right through, so that the station has two postal addresses. On the German side only track two is in operation, Czech trains stop at tracks three and five.

Is this station in Germany or in the Czech Republic? Probably both, because the border of the two countries runs right through the middle of the station. Thanks to the attached signs, you know exactly whether you are waiting for the train in Germany or in the Czech Republic.

only a red line marks the now open border. At the time of the Cold War here was a well secured border fence.
