The buildings, constructed between 1510 and 1590, have not only retained their medieval appearance to this day, but the Marstall (Royal Stables) is also one of the few buildings in Heidelberg that have survived from the Late Middle Ages.
The Zeughaus (Armory) resembles a castle in the heart of the city. It was built around 1510 to store weapons and military equipment for the protection of the Elector's Palace.
The square structure, built of massive rusticated ashlar blocks and featuring round corner towers, is one of the most valuable medieval buildings in Germany.

Today the administration and the canteen of the student union can be found in the armory. The building was originally built and used as an armory and gun foundry in the early 16th century.
