Antigua is a UNESCO WHS and is a town of great beauty. Kathedrale San Jose is part of the reason for its inclusion. Like most of Antigua the cathedral is a place of great beauty and a central focal point. Nestled in the foothills of some impressive and very active volcanoes Antigua is a beautiful place to spend a couple of days.

The Cathedral of San José is the former episcopal church of Antigua, the former capital of Guatemala. The original building was dedicated to the apostle James (Santiago), the patron saint of the Conquista.

The church building, which was built in 1543, was destroyed in 1583 by an earthquake. However, a new building was badly damaged and demolished in the middle of the 17th century after another earthquake. The present church, built from 1669 to 1678, was consecrated in 1680. Already 38 years later, aslo 1718, extensive repairs of the vaults have become necessary again. A heavy earthquake in 1773 survived only the lower part of the facade reasonably unscathed, all the vaults of the church collapsed. A complete refurbishment was missing, as the Spanish king gave Antigua as the capital. Thus, the building was restored only to a small extent as a parish church. Right at the back door of the cathedral, but today are again renovated parts
