In front of the Niederntore is the oldest building in the city of Stadthagen, the simple St. John's Chapel from 1312. The oblique viewing slits on the north side were intended for the lepers to enable them to attend the service. In the chapel hangs an epitaph for Anton Vogelsang, who went to Amsterdam and Batavia "as a completely abandoned orphan"
and the poorhouse donated 3000 thaler to his hometown Stadthagen.
