Hörde is a district in the south of Dortmund and has a long and eventful history. Originally an independent town in the county of Mark, Hörde was incorporated into Dortmund in 1928. The district is located on the Emscher and borders the Hombruch district to the west, the Hacheney, Wellinghofen and Benninghofen districts to the south, the Aplerbeck district to the east and the Innenstadt-Ost district to the north1.

Hörde is known for the Phoenix Lake, an impressive example of structural change in the Ruhr area. The lake was created on the site of the former Phoenix-Ost steelworks and is now a popular local recreation area. The district has developed from an industrial town into a modern, leisure-oriented district that is also home to technology-oriented companies1.

The history of Hörde goes back to the Middle Ages, when Hörde Castle was built. Over the centuries, Hörde has experienced numerous changes and played an important role in the steel industry in the Ruhr area.
