Adolf Kolping was born in the Obermühle on 8 Dec. 1813. In the construction of the half-timbered house, the Kolping Society has set up a small museum that gives an insight into the life and work of the Catholic social reformer. Only after a shoemaker's apprenticeship and 7 journeyman years he was able to attend the Cologne Marzellengymnasium and later study theology. He was ordained a priest in 1845 in the Menoritenkirche. He later set up hospitals and savings banks for homeless apprentices and set up further education programs. He offered the journeymen a home and got so many off the street

The Minorite Church in Cologne, where Blessed Adolph Kolping (1813 to 1965) was ordained a priest in 1845 and returned to Wuppertal-Elberfeld after years as a chaplain to serve as rector of the church and president of the "Catholic Journeymen's Associations" (today "Kolping Families") work, has also become his final resting place.
