The news about Jews in Ahaus is little for the Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern era. For the first time a Jew can be identified who is mentioned in a letter of April 14, 1555 to Prince-Bishop Wilhelm von Ketteler for Ahaus. Individual Jews were also mentioned in the following decades, but these are probably always only individual people who are in Ahaus. Only after 1678, when a Jew named Benediktus can be found in Ahaus, there was an unbroken series of Jewish life in the city up to the National Socialist expulsion. Extensive news comes from the beginning of the 19th century. During this time, the administration in the government districts will be reorganized. The Jewish communities are also part of it. But their number is still so small that Jewish citizens of several localities come together to form a joint board of the Jews in the Principality of Salm. During this time, five Jewish families lived in the city and there also seems to have been a first synagogue at the cathedral courtyard. Like almost the whole city, this was destroyed in the city fire of 1863. The new building on Marktstrasse existed until the pogrom night in 1938.
