Tips

  • The Friedenskirche in Florastraße 55 (location and directions> here) forms the center of the community. It was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1899, destroyed in 1943, rebuilt in a simpler form in 1953 and renovated inside and out in recent years.Three steel bells from the 1920s are ringing in the tower; the four bronze predecessors had been melted down during the First World War.The parish hall to the left of the Friedenskirche (Florastraße 55b) was built in 1955 by the architects Hentrich, Petschnigg & Partner (HPP). After almost five decades of heavy (wear and tear) use, it has recently been thoroughly renovated, designed to be handicapped accessible and adapted to new safety and usage requirements. The parish hall (2016) and the Friedenskirche (2015) recently received barrier-free access. In the course of the interior renovation of the Friedenskirche in 2001, the listed sacristy was also restored. It was the only room that was not destroyed in the bombing of the last war and still gave an idea of its previous design. During an inspection by the monument authority of the city of Düsseldorf, it was stipulated that this room was largely restored to its original state. For this it was necessary to remove all paint from the sandstone of the windows and from the reveals of the neo-Gothic roof vault, which was finally achieved in painstaking detail. All built-in wardrobes also had to be removed as they distorted the overall impression of the room. Together with the old furniture, the sacristy is today again an attractively designed preparation room for the worship celebrations. Many christening and wedding talks have also taken place here.Source: friedenskirche.eu/friedenskirche/die-kirche
