From the first city fortifications of the 13th/14th century, only remnants have survived. The most important building is the Schmalzturm (also known as the 'beautiful tower'), which rises at the highest point of the main square, which slopes to the west.

However, it only got its current form with late Gothic lily friezes around 1458, when another new ring of walls had already been drawn around the city and the former defense and watchtower could be renewed as a city tower with a city clock and bell. It got its name because on nice days the market women stood in the shadow of the gate with their goods, including lard. The cannonball above the passageway through the tower is a reminder of the occupation by Napoleon's troops in 1796.
