It is located northwest of the state capital Hanover.
The place name Garbsen can be documented since 1223.
Today's 13 districts have developed partly independently until the town of Garbsen was formed within its current boundaries during the territorial reform in 1974.
In the course of industrialization and especially after the Second World War, the population of Garbsen and its predecessor municipalities increased sharply.
