The Wiener Neustadt Canal is an artificial watercourse in the Archduchy of Austria under the Enns that was put into operation in 1803. This canal, which extends from Vienna to the Wiener Neustadt area and has been extended to a length of 63 km, was used primarily to transport wood, bricks and coal from the area south of the Danube to Vienna. As later private owners primarily pursued railway projects and converted important parts of the waterway into a railway line, canal shipping declined sharply from 1879 onwards and came to a complete standstill before the First World War.
