Top cycling routes to Strada Vicentina (Napoleonica)

Tips

  • The historic "Napoleon Street" leads from the San Nazario car park at the southern end of the village of Prosecco, above Miramare Castle, approx. 300 meters above sea level, approx. 4 km long to the obelisk above Trieste.
According to legend, Napoleon had it built in 1797 as a supply route for his troops.
The official name of the former strategic supply route and today's Napoleonstrasse/Strada Napoleonica cycling and hiking trail is "Strada Vicentina", named after the engineer Giacomo Vicentini, according to whose plans the path was expanded in 1821.

  • The Strada Vicentina or also called Napoleonica is a connecting road between the village of Prosecco and Trieste. The path is gravel in places and attracts many hikers. The view of the Gulf of Trieste is hard to beat. But don't let all the beauty distract you too much, because there is often a lot going on here, which is why you should always be ready to brake.

  • The road takes its name from a legend according to which it seems that it was Napoleon's troops who inaugurated the walk; more likely, however, that the other name of the route "passeggiata vicentina" dates back to the surname of the engineer Vicentini who designed the route. The starting point, the Piazzale dell'Obelisco di Opicina, is easily reachable by car (there is parking available), by bus (no. 2 and no. 4) or with the characteristic Tram. You can also start from the end of the route, that is from Prosecco, where there is also a large parking lot.A curiosity: towards the end of the Napoleonic road the path leaves the vegetation and makes its way into the rock, where some vertical walls have become a point of reference for free-climbers as a gym for beginners and not only. It is nice to stop for a while to watch how they try their hand at climbing...In the section dug between the rock on the wall you can admire the engraving of the symbol of the city of TriesteSource discovertrieste.it
