At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a mine and a gypsum processing plant started operating in Chełmek (now the area of the Bobrek forestry settlement).
The works were carried out using the opencast method, as evidenced by the remains of workings. The extracted crystalline sheets of calcium carbonate were roasted and ground in a mill located near the forester's lodge. Millstones, weighing about 1.5 tons, were set in motion with a steam engine.
The initiator of the industrial enterprise was Princess Maria Ogińska, heiress of the Bobrecki estate. Operation lasted only a few years. It is difficult to establish what caused the mine's shutdown. The deposit was probably small, and the extraction was hampered by the silt and clay present here.
In 2005, thanks to the financial support of the Rural Development Foundation and the Batory's old millstones have been exposed and made available to visitors as a tourist attraction.
