Small alleys, the streets and roads are all paved with cobblestones, many small shops. Here it feels as if time has stood still.

Did the Fat Tower and the Grote Kerk in Zierikzee stand against each other?
There are those questions that are asked over and over again. This is one of them: were the Fat Tower and the Great Church in Zierikzee against each other? The answer is: no. But how exactly did it work?
The intention was to connect the tower and the church. The intended connections for the vaulting of the space in between can be seen on the east side of the tower. It has not come to that. There was no need for it and probably they didn't have the money for it either. Instead, two walls were erected between the tower and the church, without a roof. On the west side of the church building there was a door through which it was possible to enter the church through the tower. The church also had portals on the south and on the north sides that remained in use as a rule.

Thanks to the "Dikke Toren" (Thick Tower), as the tower of Sint-Lievens Minster is also known, Zierikzee is easy to spot from afar. The tower towers 62 meters above the city - originally a colossal tower with a height of 130 meters was even planned here! Right next to the tower is the Gothic church. The church was built separately from the tower because it was feared that the foundation of the tower would cause the ground beneath the church to subside. You can climb the tower and enjoy the wonderful view over Zierikzee and the Oosterschelde from there.
