Smaller monument for the probably most famous Bavarian king in the Maximiliansanlagen not far from the Maximilianeum. Via the short "König-Ludwig-Weg" marked by a sign (not to be confused with the long-distance hiking trail of the same name) one comes to the monument by Anton Rückel, which was erected in 1967 and initiated a citizens' movement. It stands near the site of the Munich Festival Theater, which was never built by the architect Gottfried Semper, and is commemorated in the base.

In 1967, the city erected the only monument to King Ludwig II in Munich in the Maximiliansanlagen on the east bank of the Isar.
The Maximiliansanlagen belong to the English Garden.
King Ludwig II said of himself: "I want to remain an eternal mystery to myself and others".

On the right high bank of the Isar, here between the Maximilianeum and Friedensengel, you can run excellently. The König-Ludwig-Weg takes you here in the Maximiliansanlagen to the monument to King Ludwig II, erected in 1967. From 1956, a citizens' movement had ensured that a monument to the king was re-erected and initiated a competition. The sculptor Anton Rückel placed the larger-than-life bronze figure of the king on a light-colored sandstone. The royal castles of Ludwig are depicted in ore plaques on the base, as well as the Munich Festspielhaus by architect Gottfried Semper, which was never built.
