It is a remnant of the Protestant Reformed St. John's Church, which was built between 1690 and 1737 and destroyed by World War II. Before that, there was a city wine house on the site, where various contracts with wine drinkers were concluded. The evangelical denomination rented the hall for their services and when they were able to purchase the building they tore it down and built the church.
