The splendidly embattled twelve-sided bell tower is of exquisite workmanship and unprecedented layout
August 14, 2021
The building in its current form is the result of numerous renovations carried out over the centuries. The Roman forms testify to an 11th-century plan, to which was added in the 16th century the wonderful red marble entrance door, the work of Vito di Marco da Siena. On the other hand, the last modernist works, between 1926 and 1930, are the sculptures on the lunette of the gate and the windows of the elegant central rose window. The typical tuff bell tower, with a dodecagonal floor plan, three rows of mullioned windows and a crenellated top, dates back to the same period.
