The castle in Trieb, also called Schlösschen (little castle), served as the former summer residence of the Langheim abbots. Under Abbot Gallus Knauer of Langheim, the master builder Johann Georg Brückner from Coburg rebuilt the building, destroyed in the Peasants' War of 1525, as a three-winged hipped-roof structure. Reconstruction as a summer residence began in 1723 and lasted two years.

When the Langheim Monastery was dissolved, the castle was assigned to the last abbot as a residence. After his death in 1814, it served as the residence of the owners of the Nassanger estate. Karoline von Malsen, the wife of the writer Joseph Victor von Scheffel, was born here in 1833, the daughter of a Bavarian diplomat. The gravestone for the builder, Gallus Knauer, from the Langheim monastery church, which was demolished in 1804, is now embedded in the outer wall of the castle. The gate pillars come from Fassoldshof Castle (now in the Kulmbach district), which was demolished in 1912.[Source: Information board on site]
