Located east of Padang on Beach Road, the Civilian War Memorial commemorates the civilian sacrifices of World War II and the unity of Singapore's four largest ethnic groups - Malays, Chinese, Indians and Eurasians.
It was unveiled by former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on February 15, 1967 - exactly 25 years to the day Singapore fell into the hands of Japanese forces.
In this tranquil park, four pillars of similar size rise 65 meters high. They commemorate the suffering of Singapore's largest ethnic groups and those who fell and are buried here.
