The "South Pole Inn" was founded by Thomas Crean, an Irish polar explorer from Annascaul. He took part in several expeditions with Roald Amundsen (e.g. reaching the South Pole) and Ernest Shackleton. After his last expedition, Crean opened the South Pole Inn in his hometown to accommodate travelers and adventurers who, like him, wanted to explore the far north. The South Pole Inn became a well-known meeting place for polar explorers from all over the world, who exchanged stories about their expeditions with Crean.
