    Under Landgrave Ernst von Hessen-Rheinfels, Fort Scharfeneck was built in the former outer bailey of the Rheinfels in the years 1657-1667 in place of older outworks. It played an important role in the defense concept of the fortress and the two castle gates, because its long-range firearms secured the Rheinuferstrasse, the city and the Schlossweg.
