The church belonged to the monastery of the same name. The magnificent collegiate church was built as a baroque hall church between 1732 and 1734 as a replacement for a Romanesque, dilapidated cathedral according to the Vorarlberg cathedral scheme by Peter Thumb and was consecrated on October 22, 1738 by the Constance Auxiliary Bishop von Sirgenstein. The high altar and the ceiling paintings from the life of Saint Margaret were created by the painter Franz Bernhard Altenburger. The church also contains, among other things, works by the sculptor Johann Michael Winterhalder (including the statue of Margaret on the facade) and the painter Johann Josef Christian.
