The Scamander, also known as the Scamander, is an ancient river in the Troas region in Asia Minor. Today the river Karamenderes is called Çayı.

It rises in the Ida Mountains and flows north of Kumkale into the Dardanelles. On its bank lies the archaeological site of Troy and a little closer to the mouth of the prehistoric settlement hill Kumtepe.

In the Iliad of Homer, Skamandros is the river name among the people; the gods call it Xanthos. In Greek mythology he is personified by the river god of the same name. This is a son of Oceanus and Tethys. As the father of the Teukros and the Strymo, he became the progenitor of the Trojans.
