Two magnificent buildings tower over the town of Schleiden, past which the Olef River flows: the castle, which now houses a retirement home, and the church, built as a castle chapel. The restaurant mentioned in some posts appears to be permanently closed.

Schleiden Castle was a late 12th-century castle that was rebuilt into today's castle due to extensive destruction in several wars. Between 1689 and 1702 various defensive walls and the towers of the castle complex were demolished and the building complex was converted into a palace around 1726. On the south side, a three-storey building was built, which included the shield wall. Based on the plans of the Aachen architect and master builder Johann Joseph Couven, a gateway was built to connect the south and east wings. The access road to the palace courtyard was laid out to the north. Since the early 13th century, the ensemble of the former castle and today's Schleiden Castle has included the former castle chapel and today's castle church, which houses the graves and numerous relics of the noble ruling families. After the building complex had been vacant for several years, parts of the castle are now used as a restaurant and as a retirement home. Source: Wikipedia

Schleiden Castle used to be the castle of the lords of Schleiden from the house of the Counts of Blankenheim. Its origin is dated to the 12th century. Only the south wing and parts of the east wing remain from the earlier castle. When the complex was rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th century, the courtyard side was decorated with a Renaissance portal. In 1920 Schleiden Castle was sold to the Order of the Lazarists. The old count's residence burned down completely during the Second World War, but was rebuilt and is now privately owned. eifel.de/go/sehenswertes-detail/schloss_schleiden.html
