Plaggenhütte

This memory of this sod hut gives an idea of the primitive conditions under which the moor settlers lived. Farmhands and maids often applied as the first settlers, attracted to the bog by the prospect of property and exemption from taxes and military service. Cultivation was hard work and life on the bog was full of privation. The replica of this peat sod hut may convey that. The huts were built of peat sod and served as housing until the land was cleared to make way for a stone building. This Plaggenhütte is also a reminder of a woman who lived in such a hut until her death in 1916 because she had given birth to an illegitimate child and was therefore expelled from the village community.
