Bludenz train station is the train station in the Austrian town of Bludenz in Vorarlberg and is 558 m above sea level. A[1] The railway junction links the Arlberg Railway with the Lindau–Bludenz railway and the Bludenz–Schruns railway line, the joint railway station is operated jointly by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and the private Montafonerbahn (MBS).
Bludenz station was opened on July 1, 1872 by the private Vorarlberg railway as the terminus of the line coming from Lindau. As a result of the opening of the Arlberg Railway on September 21, 1884, it gained in importance, not least because of the shifting operations on the mountain railway, and became a through station. In addition, it was temporarily a shared station with the k.k. State railways before they also took over the Vorarlberg railway in 1885. The situation of the community station arose again from December 18, 1905, when the railway junction was completed by opening the line to Schruns. At the same time, electrical operations began in the station, before Bludenz became a system changeover station with the electrification of the Arlbergbahn on May 14, 1925. This circumstance caused considerable operational problems for the Montafonerbahn, which was operated with direct current, because their locomotives could no longer drive into the station under their own power. For almost 47 years, the company had to make do with a dual-powered locomotive, auxiliary combustion engines on the railcars and later also pure combustion railcars.[2] This situation existed until March 6, 1972, when the Montafonerbahn switched its route to the AC operation that is usual with ÖBB.
In the north-west extension of the freight station, a container terminal was built in the 1980s, the operator of which works on behalf of the ÖBB and specializes in the transport and handling of liquids and dust in containers.
With the completion of a shunting facility at Ludesch station for two local companies that cause a high volume of transport in 2015, the Bludenz freight yard, where the wagons for these companies were previously handled and parked, was significantly relieved.
On September 1, 2020, the newly built training workshop in the south-eastern area of the station, which offers space for 101 apprentices and replaces the previous facility in Feldkirch, was opened.
