After the last avalanche accident, the Alte Prager Hütte was rebuilt, but has not been managed since then - the role is now taken over by the Neue Prager Hütte. The Alte Prager Hütte is now a museum.

The hut was built in 1872 by the Prague section of the German Alpine Association (DAV), but was destroyed by an avalanche four years later. So in 1877 the section built another hut, this time for 45 people. Repairs were carried out in 1923 and 1972. In 1901/03 the Neue Prager Hütte was built further up, an hour's walk above.

In order to be able to cope with the costs of maintenance and further renovation of the huts, the Prague section joined the Oberland section as a local group in 1992. However, due to its condition, the hut did not receive an operating permit in 2009. The necessary conversion of the hut according to today's standards would have been tantamount to a new building. In 2010, the Matrei section of the Austrian Alpine Club wanted to purchase the hut. However, this failed.

The building was declared a listed building in 2011 because it is one of only a few simple Alpine club huts in the high mountains that have remained largely intact. In 2013, the hut, together with the New Prague Hut, was taken over by the German Alpine Club itself, as the financial effort to maintain and run both huts economically exceeded the capabilities of a section.

To preserve it, the hut was restored to its original state from 2017 to 2019 based on old plans and converted into the highest museum in Austria, which was ceremoniously inaugurated on July 19, 2019 by DAV Vice President Roland Stierle, among others. A glass wall in the entrance area allows a view of the hut, which is furnished historically. The museum is open from mid-June to mid-September.

At the same time, the hut serves as simple accommodation and material storage for research purposes of the Hohe Tauern National Park. A weather station has been set up at the hut - this records a webcam image with a view of the Schlatenkees and the Großvenediger twice a day. The temperature data from the weather station can be accessed in 15-minute intervals in the state of Tyrol's Hydro-Online. The station records other data relevant to research.
